911 and 930 tightening torques

105 figures from 10 torque tables in 2 Porsche workshop manuals, covering the air-cooled 911 from model year 1972 and the 930 turbo Carrera. Each row cites the manual and page it was read from. Extracted .

Read these against the manual, not instead of it. They were read by OCR from 40-year-old scans, and a misread digit looks exactly like a real number. Every row cites its page for that reason.

90 of the 105 figures were checked against a second unit. These manuals print each torque twice — Nm and kpm, or Nm and ft lbs — so the columns check each other, and a row whose two units disagree by more than the books’ own rounding is not published. That caught a 6.5 Nm clamp read as 65 Nm. The rows marked one unit onlyhad no second column to check against, so trust them less.

Nothing here is converted. Where a manual prints kpm it stays kpm, and a figure in ft lbs is the manual’s own conversion, not arithmetic done here.

What is not here

Five torque tables were read and then discarded, and two more gave no unit row. In the discarded five, more rows failed to parse than succeeded, which means the columns themselves were misread — and a table read that badly cannot be trusted for the rows that happened to come through, because those pair a torque with whichever fastener landed beside it. The two without units are worse: kpm and Nm differ by a factor of ten, so a figure with no unit is not a specification at all.

A third manual covering 1984 to 1989 was left out for a different reason. It is a third-party publisher’s service manual rather than a Porsche document, so its tables are that publisher’s compilation and not the factory’s figures.

Only the specification data is reproduced here. The repair procedures are authored text and the exploded views are drawings; both stay in the manuals.
