What the issue covers

Editorial features only; advertising and classified material are indexed separately below.

Page 22

Singer Targa in the UK

Singer presented a 964-based Targa restoration at Goodwood. The featured car used a seam-welded shell, Öhlins suspension, a six-speed gearbox and an Ed Pink-built four-litre flat-six publicly rated at 380 bhp.

Page 40

Mike Blanchet's Carrera 3.2

A long-term owner profile centred on a Carrera 3.2 and the suspension, maintenance and usability decisions that kept it in regular use.

Page 46

Jäger Bomb 930 Turbo

Williams-Crawford rebuilt a matching-numbers 930 from a corroded, heavily modified shell into an IROC-inspired road car. The issue records 487 bhp on a rolling road, a claimed 550 bhp at higher boost, 1,210 kg, rebuilt Brembo brakes, refreshed suspension and 18-inch BBS wheels.

Page 56

Your first Porsche 2015

Ten very different routes into Porsche ownership under a £25,000 ceiling, useful today as a dated market snapshot rather than a current buying guide.

Page 88

First-time nerves

A reader account of moving from general enthusiasm to a first purchase, with the practical lesson that condition, history and an independent inspection matter more than finding the cheapest example.

Page 94

Three generations of Boxster 2.7

A back-to-back test of the 986, 987 and 981. The magazine preferred the 987 for simple driver enjoyment, while recognising the 981 as the easiest all-round car and the 986 as the light, characterful value choice.

Page 108

Tech 9 specialist profile

A period profile of Tech 9's mix of modern TECHART conversions, classic restoration, Sportomatic recommissioning and engine building. Advertised outputs are workshop claims, not independent tests.

Page 110

Project IndyCar, part two

The development story of Porsche's Type 2708/80 2.7-litre turbo V8 and its late-1980s CART programme, including methanol fuel, boost restrictions, telemetry and the difficult transition from testing to racing.

Page 120

997 and 987 air-conditioning condenser replacement

A workshop guide explaining how exposed front condensers corrode or become perforated, why both sides and the receiver-dryer deserve inspection, and why refrigerant recovery and final charging belong with equipped professionals.

Page 134

Porsche projects

Updates from the magazine's project fleet, useful as ownership evidence but not treated as general workshop instructions.

Page 143

Porsche Q&A

Reader questions and specialist answers on specific cars. The archive records the topics, but safety- or engine-critical advice is not republished as a universal procedure.

Page 152

996 Carrera 4S buyer's guide

A period guide to the wide-body, all-wheel-drive 996 C4S, covering its 3.6-litre M96 engine, Turbo-derived chassis hardware, specification and inspection risks.

Page 157

1984 Carrera 3.2 tried and tested

Inspection of an 84,419-mile Sport with 915 transmission, documenting paint bubbles at known corrosion points, a strong history, refreshed oil lines and the need to budget structural preservation despite an attractive presentation.

02

The £25,000 question — a 2015 snapshot

The ten prices below are preserved because they show the period market. They must not be compared with today's asking prices without a new valuation pass.

Model2015 priceEngineOutputPeriod buying viewPage
Cayman S (987)under £15,000 cited3.4-litre flat-six315 bhp at 7,200 rpm
273 lb ft at 4,750 rpm
Freshness, balance and usable road pace made it the driver's choice; inspect engine, electronics and suspension condition rather than relying on age alone.58
911 SC£20,000 entry; £25,000 example3.0-litre flat-six204 bhp at 5,900 rpm
197 lb ft at 4,300 rpm
The air-cooled entry point in 2015, but already a rolling-restoration proposition. Rust, previous repairs and engine condition govern the purchase.60
911 Carrera 2 (996.1)£13,000 entry for a solid private car3.4-litre flat-six300 bhp at 6,800 rpm
258 lb ft at 4,600 rpm
The issue valued the narrow-body manual C2 for steering and usability while flagging M96 and IMS uncertainty, air-conditioning condensers, bushes and clutch history.64
Boxster 2.7 (986)£2,500 featured; about £4,500 for good private cars2.7-litre flat-six220 bhp at 6,400 rpm
260 Nm at 4,750 rpm
The cheapest route in the group. The featured car had patchy history, failed air conditioning, a split plastic rear window, mixed tyres and suspected suspension wear.66
Cayenne S (957)£20,000 featured4.8-litre V8385 bhp at 6,200 rpm
369 lb ft at 3,500 rpm
Space, pace and depreciation made the case; the warning was that a cheap, complex SUV can still be expensive to repair.68
914 2.0about £15,000 good; £16,500 featured2.0-litre flat-four100 bhp at 5,000 rpm
115 lb ft at 3,500 rpm
A practical mid-engined Targa with two boots. Rust, costly body panels and sun-damaged interior trim were the main inspection cautions.70
Boxster S (986)£7,000 and up for a good 3.2 S3.2-litre flat-six266 bhp at 6,200 rpm
229 lb ft at 4,600 rpm
Praised for steering, packaging and value. The article preferred early examples but its broad reliability opinions remain period commentary, not a substitute for inspection.72
911 Carrera 2 (997.1)most of the £25,000 budget3.6-litre flat-six321 bhp at 6,800 rpm
273 lb ft at 4,250 rpm
The base Carrera on 18-inch wheels and standard dampers was preferred for road use. The guide still flagged bore scoring and IMS-era engine risk.74
968 Club Sport / Sportmid-teens for a Club Sport3.0-litre inline-four240 bhp at 6,200 rpm
225 lb ft at 4,100 rpm
A rare, practical transaxle car with predictable handling. The issue distinguishes lightweight Club Sports from UK luxury-spec Sport derivatives.76
911 Targa project£12,000 project purchase2.7-litre flat-six165 bhp at 5,800 rpm
173 lb ft at 4,000 rpm
A project is not a cheap finished car. The article makes skills, facilities, parts cost and a realistic end state the deciding factors.78

03

Technical notes worth retaining

Facts are separated from the magazine's opinions and from any implied workshop procedure.

From page 94

Boxster 2.7 development

  • The 2000 model-year 986 grew from 2.5 to 2.7 litres by increasing stroke from 72 mm to 78 mm while retaining bore size; output became 220 bhp and 192 lb ft.
  • The 2003 model-year 986 added a glass rear window, revised bodywork, Variocam intake timing and 228 bhp.
  • The first 987 2.7 was listed at 240 bhp and 199 lb ft; the 2007 model-year Variocam Plus update raised that to 245 bhp and 201 lb ft.
  • The road test preferred the 987 for steering feel and simple driver enjoyment, the 981 for everyday completeness, and the 986 for lightness and value.

From page 120

997 / 987 air-conditioning condensers

  • The condensers sit ahead of the engine-cooling radiators and are vulnerable to debris and corrosion.
  • Loss of cooling performance or refrigerant can therefore begin at either front condenser rather than at the cabin unit.
  • With the front apron removed, inspect both condensers, the cooling radiators, pipe ends, seals, fasteners and receiver-dryer together.
  • Refrigerant recovery and final evacuation/charging require professional equipment; the archive is not a refrigerant-handling procedure.

From page 152

996 Carrera 4S specification and checks

  • The C4S combines a 3,596 cc, 320 bhp flat-six with all-wheel drive, a 60 mm wider body, Turbo-derived suspension and 330 mm brakes front and rear.
  • The magazine lists 1,525 kg, 273 lb ft at 4,250 rpm, 0–60 mph in 5.6 seconds and a 174 mph maximum speed.
  • Its viscous coupling can send between five and forty per cent of torque to the front axle according to the period guide.
  • Inspection priorities were service history, M96/IMS and bore condition, accident repair, suspension joints, brakes and a cabin prone to wear and rattles.

From page 110

Porsche IndyCar Type 2708/80

  • Porsche developed a 2.7-litre turbocharged V8 for CART under the Type 2708/80 designation.
  • The programme had to accommodate methanol fuel, series boost controls, a ban on intercoolers and CART's pop-off valve.
  • Telemetry was used to return operating parameters to the pits, but chassis, transmission and politics made the programme more than an engine exercise.
  • The issue treats the effort as a difficult learning programme rather than a straightforward extension of Porsche's sports-car success.

From page 157

1984 Carrera 3.2 inspection pattern

  • The inspected car showed early bubbling around a rear lamp, a B-pillar, wing and bumper areas despite an otherwise strong presentation.
  • Its 915 gearbox, non-assisted steering, brakes and engine were judged positively, while a 75–80 mph steering-wheel wobble needed attention.
  • A long service file, new oil lines and corrosion protection improved the evidence, but did not remove the need for planned structural work.
  • The £40,000 asking price is retained only as a September 2015 market observation.
